History of Melzo
The alleged Etruscan origins that according to tradition derived from the name Melphum or Melpum mentioned by Pliny the elder-represented accordingly in the cartography of Italy Gallica sive Cisalpine Gaul of Abraham Ortelius-have never been tested, nor is there any archaeological recovery able to confirm them. The name most likely derives from a Germanic name (see: Fostermann). But place names in ancient times frequently changed and therefore are not rejecting subsequent designations taken from the ancient Melpum in the course of the centuries: “Moscow” during the Middle Ages was “Mellesiate” (quoted from a document dating from the ninth century) and then Melesiate and Meleso (secc. XII-XIII) name that recurs several times in contemporary Milanese cards . Melzo had its fate very soon related to those of the vicinaMilano, especially since the end of the 13th century when, with the opening of the conflict between the Visconti and Torriani, opened to the reality melzese three centuries of wars.
By virtue of its geographical location and because of the changed political balance between Milan and Venice, Melzo lived as border reality frequent reversals in front, which throughout the fifteenth century saw confronted the Duchy visconteo-sforzesco and la Serenissima: premiere episode legendary heroine Agnes Pasta driving an unlikely female pro-Sforza revolt against Venetian soldiers, whereas more realistically interpreted as a protest against poverty and violence, and later the fief to the noble young milaneseLucia Marliani, which the Duke Galeazzo Maria Sforza was hopelessly in love, a costellarono century intended to quit, to the fall of the new Duke Ludovico il Moro at the hands of the French, with the delivery of the marquisate of Melzo to Gian Giacomo Trivulzio, leader of Louis XII and founder of a dynasty that will prevail for nearly two centuries of history melzo characterized by pomp taken from the House to decorate their homes and the most representative buildings of the village and from a social and economic stability overall.
Since 1513 by animated weekly market, the day of Tuesday, production planning melzese, even after the release of Trivulzio, scene remained predominantly centered on a long time farming activities – with a vocation of ancient origins for the dairy sector – to which the Seicento joins the first protoindustriale reality of a brick kiln. It will however wait until the end of the eighteenth century, with the appearance of the first spinning mills, to attend the launch of the new concrete development citizen – significantly marked by the opening of the Hospital of the stars, wanted in 1770 by the Habsburg administration of Maria Theresa of Austria – that between the nineteenth and twentieth century completely reconfigure both the appearance as long as there is village life habits of its population. In 1838, with the resumption of manufacturing activity after a momentary period of stalemate, is silk to represent the driving force of the first industrialization melzese, with a quick transfer of labour from agriculture to textiles that exhausted the moment of maximum expansion of textile factories (Casanova, Ornago, Peroni, Gavazzi) – later focused decisively towards the dairy industry that, in the century and up to World War II, is now coming by configuring the ancient vocation of a village in the reality of a food hub of national significance, thanks to the Galbani and Invernizzi.
